Physicians
Are you or your staff frustrated by spending too much time on the phone or reading through paperwork and not enough time with patients?
Provide better care and reduce the hassles of patient information management with CORHIO and health information exchange.
What is Health Information Exchange?
Health information exchange (HIE) is the ability to electronically exchange patients' clinical information including:
- Lab results
- Pathology results
- Radiology reports
- Orders
- Patient care summaries
- Transcriptions
- Referrals
- Consult reports
- Hospital discharge summaries
- Meds, allergies, problem lists
…when it's needed for patient care.
Data exchanged through the HIE is shared safely & securely, meeting or exceeding HIPAA standards.
Download a printable PDF overview of HIE here.
Access a current list of participating providers here.
CORHIO HIE Benefits:
CORHIO Improves Care
With accurate and standardized information, you will get results and reports in a consistent format. This means less chance for error and fewer treatment delays for patients.
CORHIO Saves Time
With faster access to information, you will have patient information compiled from across systems when you need it. This means you and your staff will spend less time searching, faxing and calling other providers for information.
CORHIO Reduces Cost
With automated and streamlined information exchange, your practice becomes more efficient and resource utilization goes down. HIE also reduces "interface" costs, which are the connections between your EMR/EHR and other electronic Health IT systems. Furthermore, HIE reduces expenses for patients related to unnecessary medications, tests and hospitalizations.
A National Survey of Physician Practices Using HIE Reports on the Benefits:
- Improved access to test results and resultant efficiencies on practice
- Improved quality of practice life
- Reduced staff time spent on handling lab and radiology results
- Reduced staff time spent on clerical administration and filing
*All of the above are according to a national survey by eHealth Initiative.

CO-REC Support for EHR Adoption & Upgrades
Some primary care physicians may be eligible for support in adopting or upgrading to a electronic health record (EHR) and achieving meaningful use through CO-REC. CO-REC offers technical assistance, guidance and information on best practices to directly support and accelerate Colorado priority primary care providers' efforts to become meaningful users of Electronic Health Records (EHRs).
'Approved' EHR Vendors
To save you time and help you make informed, cost-effective purchases related to EHR systems and health IT consulting services, CO-REC has created a list of "approved vendors." Visit our Approved Vendor page for more details.
Community Approach to HIE in Colorado
Physicians obtain the most benefit from HIE when multiple providers in their region are connected to the network. Therefore, CORHIO is working to implement large numbers of physicians and other health care providers community-by-community. Communities with providers being implemented now include:
- Boulder County
- Colorado Springs
- Denver Metro (which may evolve into multiple smaller communities)
- Northern Colorado (Larimer & Weld counties)
- Pueblo
- San Luis Valley
- Summit County
Currently, CORHIO is serving physicians east of the continental divide. Physicians west of the continental divide should contact the Quality Health Network (QHN), a fully-operational, regional HIE based out of Grand Junction. CORHIO and QHN plan to connect their networks for statewide connectivity in 2012.
