  • One Group’s Meaningful Use Journey

    Two groups of physicians in the Denver area, IMMUNOe Health Centers and Horizon Pediatrics and Primary Care, were looking forward to earning incentive money for their Greenway EHR purchase. They had gathered all the necessary paperwork and submitted their attestation to the first stage of the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program called “Adopt, Implement, or Upgrade (AIU).” The attestation for this multispecialty group of allergy, asthma, immunology, pediatrics, and primary care physicians was a bit complex, but they felt confident they had done it right.

  • One of Boulder’s Largest Physician Groups Joining the CORHIO HIE

    All three office locations of Boulder Medical Center are in the process of connecting with the CORHIO health information exchange (HIE), including more than 65 physicians and several other providers. Boulder Medical Center is a large physician-owned organization that offers 20 specialty departments, with a focus on primary care, allergy, cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedics, podiatry, surgery, and urology. They will integrate clinical patient data from the HIE into their NextGen electronic health record (EHR) system. In addition, they will utilize CORHIO’s secure Web portal in their urgent care department to search for information on patients with no records from their facilities.

  • Health Information Exchange Expands to Trinidad, Colo.

    Mt. San Rafael Hospital and Clinic are taking an innovative approach to medical records and care coordination. Both facilities have signed on to participate in the CORHIO HIE, but not in a typical fashion. Mt. San Rafael Hospital has decided to send clinical results data to their clinic via the CORHIO system. As a second phase of the project, the hospital itself will have access to these data results via CORHIO’s PatientCare 360® secure online portal. So they are in essence creating a truly bidirectional and interoperable system of health information exchange within their network. The hospital will be one of the first critical access hospitals in the state to connect to CORHIO.

  • Kaiser Permanente Colorado, State’s Largest Nonprofit Health Plan, Joins CORHIO

    Kaiser Permanente Colorado has signed an agreement to participate in CORHIO’s health information exchange (HIE) network. Participation in the CORHIO HIE provides Kaiser Permanente’s physicians and other clinical caregivers with additional information on their members when care is provided outside of the health plan’s centralized network. Kaiser Permanente plans to initially utilize the HIE information for members in southern Colorado, including Colorado Springs and Pueblo, and hopes to later expand to other parts of the state.

  • Patients in Centura Health Emergency Rooms Benefitting from HIE

    Physicians in five Centura Health emergency departments, staffed by APEX Emergency Group, are now accessing their patients’ lab results and health histories from the CORHIO health information exchange (HIE) network, which includes clinical data on more than 3.2 million unique patients in Colorado. When emergency room physicians can instantly pull up a patient’s longitudinal health record, they can more quickly diagnose and treat patients as well as potentially prevent life-threatening complications including drug interactions and allergic reactions.

  • Hospitals Participating in Health Information Exchange Order Fewer Redundant Tests

    A new study from the University of Michigan, published in Medical Care, uncovered that emergency department physicians of hospitals participating in health information exchange (HIE) are ordering fewer repeat tests. The study analyzed data from 2007 to 2010 in two large states – California and Florida – that were early adopters of HIE. It compared 37 emergency departments that participated in HIE during the study period to 410 emergency departments that did not.

  • Urgent Care Clinic in Durango First to Connect to CORHIO

    Durango Urgent Care, an 11-provider after-hours community urgent care clinic, is now connected to the CORHIO network. This is the first urgent care clinic to connect to CORHIO’s health information exchange (HIE). Their second location, Aztec Urgent Care in Aztec, New Mexico, is also accessing some patient data via the CORHIO network because their labs are processed at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango.

  • Trend Report: Patient Portal Adoption on the Rise

    The patient portal market is poised to skyrocket, according to new analysis released in September. A report by Frost and Sullivan cites a predicted 221 percent growth in the market to nearly $900 million by 2017. The report also found that half of U.S. hospitals and 40 percent of office-based physicians have a portal through their electronic health record (EHR) or practice management system. But many are not using that technology for various reasons, such as cost, interoperability or workflow issues and limited functionality, so they are seeking alternative options.

  • Colorado Hospitals Begin Meaningful Use Stage 2 Data Collection

    October 1st marked the first day that hospitals participating in the Medicare or Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs could start tracking data they need to attest to Stage 2 of Meaningful Use. Hospitals need 90 days of data to attest next year. Eligible hospitals can complete their attestation to Stage 2 as early as January 2014, which means the early adopters are collecting data now to be ready.

  • New Critical Access Hospitals to Become HIE Participants

    Two new critical access hospitals have signed up to participate with the CORHIO health information exchange. One of those is Rio Grande Hospital, a 17-bed CAH in Del Norte that serves residents in the western part of the San Luis Valley. The other is Estes Park Medical Center, a 25-bed CAH in southwestern Larimer County at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park. Both hospitals serve small towns and remote areas of the state and are vital to the residents and visitors in their areas.

  • Quest Diagnostics Connects to CORHIO

    Quest Diagnostics has connected to CORHIO and as a result, all of the state’s largest medical laboratories are now participating in health information exchange. Quest Diagnostics has joined LabCorp and Colorado Laboratory Services (CLS) on the network. Cedar Diagnostics and Schryver Medical are two additional large medical laboratories that are in the process of connecting to the CORHIO HIE.

  • EHR Adoption Has Earned Colorado Providers and Hospitals Nearly $200 Million

    More than 3,800 payments have been made to Colorado providers and hospitals in the Medicare incentive program, totaling more than $131 million. Colorado Medicaid providers and hospitals have received more than 1,500 incentive payments, totaling more than $62 million. In both programs, Stage 1 is open, so many are attesting to meaningfully using their electronic health systems for the first time.

    Providers from all over Colorado are joining CORHIO’s Health Information Exchange (HIE) network to access patient clinical data from hospitals and labs. In addition to the 1,031 providers currently connected to the HIE, nearly 1,000 more are in the process of connecting. More than 71% of the office-based providers participating are physicians, though there are also Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Nurse Midwives also participating.

Denver-based Craig Hospital is world-renowned as a premier center for specialty rehabilitation for people with spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries. Through the HIE connection, patients who are being transferred from another participating Colorado acute-care hospital to Craig Hospital will have smoother transitions because the details of their electronic medical records will immediately follow them as they transition facilities.

  • All of Colorado’s Large Hospitals Now Participating in Health Information Exchange

    Exempla Healthcare’s three hospitals will connect to the CORHIO HIE as a result of the recently executed agreement. Exempla Healthcare, an affiliate of SCL Health System, operates Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, and Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver. With this agreement, now all Colorado hospitals with more than 100 licensed beds are now connected or are in the process to connect to an HIE network.

  • More Than 100 Long-Term and Post-Acute Care Organizations Participating in CORHIO’s Successful Challenge Grant

    The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) awarded CORHIO a Health Information Exchange (HIE) Challenge Grant in 2011 to help long-term and post-acute care (LTPAC) providers adopt HIE technology to improve care and reduce costs. In particular, the program focused on patients discharged from hospitals and their transition to the care of a skilled nursing facility, long-term acute care facility, assisted living, home health, or hospice. Through the grant, which is now closed for applications, CORHIO is offering compensation to 119 organizations for participating and meeting the qualifications of certain milestones, such as reporting data on hospital readmissions.
