Your Feedback Requested: Proposed Changes to Meaningful Use from CMS

Date: June 18th, 2014Category: CORHIO e-NewsletterTopics: EHRs, Meaningful Use, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

CORHIO is collecting your feedback on the proposed modifications to the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs for 2014 including certification options and the delay of stage 3.

In May, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) announced a Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) that suggests new options for providers unable to upgrade in time to attest to Meaningful Use (MU) this year. The proposed rule would provide options for Meaningful Use (MU) Eligible Professionals (EP), Eligible Hospitals (EH) and Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) to use earlier editions of certified EHR technology (CEHRT) for 2014 MU reporting in addition to finalizing the delay of Stage 3.

The proposed delay is for EPs, EHs and CAHs that have not yet fully implemented a 2014 CEHRT and cannot demonstrate a 90-day EHR reporting period with MU data from the 2014 CEHRT. The proposed rule gives these providers options for attesting to MU in 2014 that range from using their 2011 CEHRT to attest to 2013 Stage 1 Objectives and Measures to choosing either 2013 Stage 1 Objectives and Measures or 2014 Stage 1 Objectives and Measures if they are using a combination of 2011 and 2014 CEHRT.
